This course will enable the students to
CO1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the theoretical application of the psychosocial model to various disorders.
CO2. Discriminate between universal and culture-specific disorders paying attention to the different types of sociocultural causal factors.
CO3. Demonstrate an awareness of the range of mental health problems with the psychosocial/contextual mediation.
CO4. Formulate clinical work up of clients and build psychosocial formulations and interventions, drawing on their knowledge of psychosocial models and their strengths and weaknesses.
CO5.Apply and integrate alternative or complementary theoretical frameworks in overall management of mental health problems.
CO6.Describe, explain and apply current code of conduct and ethical principles that apply to clinical psychologists working in the area of mental health and illness.
CO7. Illustrate Mental Health Acts and Policies, currently prevailing in the country and their implications in professional activities of clinical psychologists.
CO8. Recognize knowledge about the normality and abnormality of behavior.
CO9. Develop an understanding of the nature and significance of the emerging area of mental health within a life-span perspective.
CO10. Enumerate the importance of social and psychological processes in the experience of health and illness.
CO11.Trace the behavioural risk factors vis-à-vis disease prevention and health promotion.
History of Clinical Psychology and its role in understanding and alleviation of mental illness, promotion of mental health and rehabilitation of the mentally ill, role and functions of Clinical Psychologists in DMHP, Professional code of conduct and ethical issues.
Epidemiological surveys in Indian context; socio-cultural correlates of mental illness; psychological well-being and quality of life – measures and factors influencing.
Concept of normality and abnormality, causes of mental disorders – psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic and biological models.
Early deprivation and trauma; neglect and abuse; attachment; separation; inadequate parenting styles; marital discord and divorce; maladaptive peer relationships; communication style; family burden; expressed emotions and relapse.
Discrimination, gender and ethnicity, social class, poverty and unemployment, social tension & violence, crime and delinquency, suicide, addictive behavior, social aggression with special reference to Indian context.
